Interesting Facts About Strawberry Field
Strawberry Field was originally a Victorian-era private residence built by shipping magnate George Warren in 1870.
The site was acquired by the Salvation Army in 1934 and opened as a children’s home two years later.
The original Victorian house was demolished in 1973 and replaced with purpose-built family units.
John Lennon grew up nearby and often played in the grounds of Strawberry Field. The famous Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" was inspired by John Lennon’s memories of the site.
The original red-painted entrance gates, a pilgrimage spot for fans, were stolen in 2000 but later recovered.
There is a Steinway piano on display that John Lennon used to compose and record his song "Imagine."
Paul McCartney contributed an introduction to the visitor exhibition at Strawberry Field.
A Ukrainian Peace Monument unveiled in 2023 is currently located at the site until it can be permanently moved to Ukraine.
